The John Collins Society seeks to encourage Oriel students in examining the relationship between Christianity and contemporary ethical, cultural and scientific challenges.

This year's Collins Lecturer will be Professor Robert Beckford, who will speak on the title, 'Is God a White Racist? Decolonizing English Theology'.

Robert Beckford is Professor of Theology and Culture in the African Diaspora at Canterbury Christ Church University. He has particular research interests in African and African Caribbean history, religion and popular culture, and his research interrogates the intersection(s) of social history, religious experience and cultural politics.  

Professor Beckford researches in written, visual and audio texts and has won numerous awards, including a BAFTA. He has presented over twenty television documentaries on commercial television stations, including Channel 4, BBC 2, BBC4 and Discovery USA. Professor Beckford has also worked as radio presenter for BBC Radio.

This event will take place in the Harris Lecture Theatre at 5.30pm on Tuesday 7th November and is open to the public.
