College to Hold Public Consultation Sessions for Brewhouse Yard Project

A public exhibition will be held on Friday 22nd and Saturday 23rd September 2017 to enable members of the public to view proposals for Oriel’s Brewhouse Yard project, which aims to deliver improved social spaces and better disabled access for the College.

This is part of the consultation process in advance of a planning application that the College plans to make later this year.

The proposed project will involve the replacement of the College’s 1920s kitchen addition with a new basement kitchen and additional social/dining spaces adjacent to the main Hall and bar. This new expansion will enable the College to offer students, staff and guests a less formal all-day café style social space and will complement the formal dining options currently offered by the College.

This project will help the College to keep pace with the demands and expectations of the modern college experience, not least in catering for its now 700-strong community of students and staff; a greater number than the College’s Hall and kitchen were designed to deal with.

The Brewhouse Yard project will also incorporate work to improve access to and between key social spaces for those with disabilities or limited mobility, enabling them to have the same access that other members of College enjoy.

Oriel wishes to achieve these objectives whilst also preserving and better revealing the historic significance of its buildings, and the College has worked with Historic England and Oxford City Council with this aim.

The College is working with architects Allies and Morrison on this project, and representatives from both Oriel and Allies and Morrison will be present at the public consultation sessions to explain the proposals and answer any questions.

Alumni will also have the chance to view these plans, as there will be an exhibition for their benefit in the JCR Annex during the Alumni Weekend on the 15th and 16th September.
