Dr Mark Whittow to be Appointed as Oriel’s Next Provost

Oriel’s Governing Body is pleased to announce that it intends to elect Dr Mark Whittow as the College’s next Provost, to succeed Moira Wallace OBE when she reaches the end of her term in August 2018.

Mark Whittow, M.A., D.Phil., F.R.Hist.S., F.S.A., is a medieval historian and archaeologist, University Lecturer in Byzantine Studies, and a current Fellow of Corpus Christi College, Oxford. He was Senior Proctor of the University in 2016-17, and has a long association with Oriel College as Lecturer in History. His wife, Helen, who is a practising QC and Deputy High Court Judge, will join him at Oriel.

Referring to his appointment, Dr Whittow stated: “Oriel College is a vibrant and exciting community, which seems only to go from strength to strength. It is a great privilege to have been entrusted with the task of leading such a historic institution whose aims of promoting teaching and research at the highest level are more important than ever.”

In keeping with the College’s Statutes, the formal vote to elect Dr Whittow will take place at a Governing Body Meeting on Wednesday 7th March 2018, and he will join the College in early September. Dr Whittow will become the 53rd Provost in the College’s almost 700-year history.
