By Car
Oxford is approached by several major motorways:
- London-Oxford: A40/M40/A40;
- Birmingham-Oxford: M40/A34;
- Bristol-Oxford: M32/M4/A34.
Many Oxford streets are now closed to traffic, and parking is severely limited. Therefore, visitors are strongly encouraged to use the Park and Ride bus services which operate between the city centre and parking areas on the outskirts. For their locations, see the map of the Ring Road (from the East, there is a Park and Ride at Thornhill; from the North, at Woodstock Road or Water Eaton; from the West, at Botley Road; or from the South, at Abingdon Road). See the Oxford Bus Company website for details.
If you do need to drive into the city centre, there are several parking spaces within Oxford (see below, Parking). On-street car parking in Oxford can be expensive. We regret that Oriel College does not have any car parking spaces for students or visitors, although it is possible to obtain a short-term parking permit from the Lodge for loading/unloading purposes.
Oriel College is reasonably accessible, being located just off Oxford's High Street.
From London (A40/M40/A40). If you are approaching Oxford from the East, you will cross Magdalen Bridge and arrive on the High Street. After crossing the bridge, take the second turn on your left (Merton Street, after the Botanic Gardens and Rose Lane). Proceed to the end of Merton Street and turn right into Oriel Square.
From the North (M40/A34). If you approach from the North, you will reach St Giles' Street. (St Giles' turns into Cornmarket Street, which is closed to traffic. Therefore, you will need to circle around towards the railway station and back towards the city centre). Turn right onto Beaumont Street, and continue to Worcester Street. Turn left on Worcester street, then right onto Hythe Bridge Street, and then left onto Hollybush Row, which leads in a long arc back to St Aldate's Street. Turn left on St Aldate's, and proceed North to the High Street. The best approach to Oriel Square from the High is via King Edward Street, which is on your right before Oriel Street (see map).
From the West (M32/M4/A34). From the Botley Road, turn right onto Hollybush Row. Hollybush leads in a long arc back to St Aldate's Street. Turn left on St Aldate's, and proceed North to the High Street. The best approach to Oriel Square from the High is via King Edward Street, which is on your right before Oriel Street (see map).
From the South (Ring Road). Cross Folly Bridge, and proceed North up St Aldate's to the High Street. The best approach to Oriel Square from the High is via King Edward Street, which is on your right before Oriel Street (see map).
Parking
There are several parking spaces in the city itself. The Oxford Information Centre (01865 726871) can offer current details on parking facilities. The car park south of Beaumont Street (ideal for those traveling from the North) and in the Westgate Shopping Centre are both reasonably close to Oriel.
