Prof. David Charles, Tutor in Philosophy
Prof. David Charles, BPhil, MA, DPhil. Colin Prestige Fellow and Tutor in Philosophy, Vice-Provost.
I have been a Fellow in Philosophy in Oriel since 1979 with a few interludes as a Visiting Professor in the U.S. (in U.C.L.A and Rutgers) and in Japan.
My main research interests are in Ancient Philosophy, where I am especially interested in Aristotle’s philosophy, and in Philosophy of Mind. I have written two books on Aristotle, one on his Philosophy of Action (London 1984) and one on his discussion of science and metaphysics (Aristotle on Meaning and Essence, Oxford 2000) and am currently engaged on a third on his Ethics. I have also written on issues concerning intention, explanation and the emotions in contemporary philosophy.
One of my goals is to re-examine the way in which philosophers today understand experience as a purely psychological phenomenon which then needs to be reconnected with a purely physiological set of brain processes. My aim is to call into question the manner in which the mind/ body question was originally set up by Descartes when he rejected the idea that experience was essentially psycho-physical in nature.
I enjoy teaching both undergraduates and graduates and seek to encourage them to develop their own ideas and viewpoints on philosophical issues. I am committed to ensuring that students in Philosophy in Oriel succeed in developing their critical and analytical abilities in an environment which is enjoyable, supportive and challenging.
I have been much involved in attempts to broaden access to Oxford University and was involved in setting up Access Cymru Wales and the earlier Oxford/ London PPE scheme.
