My research on Russian literature has been largely concerned with two subversive writers of the early Stalin era, Mikhail Bulgakov (1891-1940) and Evgeny Zamiatin (1884-1937). This research has generated interpretive analyses of their satirical writings, scholarly editions of texts, and biographies of each of these authors, based on extensive archival work in Russia, France, England and the USA. I also have a particular interest in Russian drama, which has led to practical work as a consultant for the Royal Shakespeare Company, the National Theatre, and the Belgrade Theatre, Coventry. Projects for the future include further work on Zamiatin and on Russian drama, as well as an investigation of cultural contacts between Moscow and the Russian emigration in Paris during the 1930s.
