Glenn Black is Senior Tutor, Senior Librarian and Emeritus Fellow of the College. He did his first degree at the University of Cape Town and his doctorate at Oxford. He was Oriel’s first Official Fellow in English from 1978 to 2010. He has been visiting professor of English in Sweden and Japan, and is an editor of the long-established journal Notes & Queries. As well as havinng been the College’s director of studies in English, he has held many administrative positions in the College (Dean, Senior Dean, Tutor for Admissions, Vice-Provost and Acting Provost), the English Faculty (chair of the Faculty Board, co-ordinator of admissions) and the University (Junior Proctor, elected member and subsequently chair of the General Board of the Faculties, chair of the Staff Committee, elected member of the University Council, Pro-Vice-Chancellor Academic, elected member of the Humanities Board). The Senior Tutor is responsible for the academic administration of the College. Dr Black holds the office on a part-time basis, so urgent enquiries should be made with the Academic Registrar in the first instance.
