I first came to Oxford in 1999 to do a D.Phil. in Modern History at Merton College, having previously studied English at Harvard University and Trinity College Dublin. I went on to complete a second BA in Theology at Emmanuel College Cambridge as part of my preparation for ordination in the Church of England. Before coming to Oriel in 2010, I served as the Episcopal/Anglican Chaplain at Harvard University.
My primary academic interest is modern church history, specifically that of the Anglican churches of the North Atlantic during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. I have published on various aspects of Irish social, literary, and religious life, and my book The Minority Voice: Hubert Butler and Southern Irish Protestantism, 1900-91 recently appeared in the Oxford Historical Monographs series. My current research revolves around the social transformation of the American Episcopal Church in the 1960s. Here at Oriel I teach Reformation and modern church history, as well as offer classes on study skills and essay composition.
