Find out more about all the facilities available for Oriel students, including our 24/7 Library, our JCR and MCR facilities and our multi-faith worship room.
Oriel's Library can be accessed by students 24 hours per day, 7 days per week (via 'Bod card') during term time, making it possible to study whenever suits you best. Books can be taken out on regular or long-term loan, and if you cannot find the book you are looking for, simply fill in the online recommendation form and the Librarian will aim to get it for you as quickly as possible. The Library also has printing/scanning/photocopying equipment, as well as a number of computer terminals for student use. For more information, visit the Library pages.
Junior Common Room (JCR)
The JCR rooms are located in Third Quad, and provide space for undergraduate students to meet up, relax and sometimes hold special events. The two rooms have a mix of comfy chairs and sofas, as well as a kitchen, tuck shop and ping pong table.
Middle Common Room (MCR)
The two MCR rooms are located on the College's 'Island Site', with great views over Oriel Square and Christ Church. One room is a 'common room' intended for socialising and relaxing and features comfy chairs, tables and a kitchen (with microwave, fridge and dishwasher) for making snacks and drinks. Free tea, freshly-ground coffee and biscuits are provided for MCR members. There is a small MCR bar, which is open at certain times during the week.
There is also an MCR study room, complete with desks, leather wing chairs and blackboards - a nice alternative to the Library if you feel like a change of scene (and more coffee).
The College bar, located in Front Quad, is open to all members of College (although there is another bar in the MCR) and serves a variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. With its stone archways and low ceilings, the bar is very atmospheric and has a television, snooker table and various comfy seats and sofas. The bar is used for JCR and MCR events such as 'bops' (parties), post-formal drinks, open mic and comedy nights and more!
The Music Room, complete with a piano, is located in Third Quad and is open to College members when booked in advance as a space to practice music.
The College Chapel is located in Front Quad holds services twice per week (on a Thursday and Sunday). For more information, visit the Chapel pages.
Oriel values the diversity of spiritual and faith traditions represented in our community. For individuals who wish to meditate, pray or observe religious rites in a College space other than the Chapel, a multi-faith room is available.
The College has three gyms - two on the main site, and one at James Mellon Hall, our graduate accommodation on Cowley Road. The gyms are free for students to use (once they have completed an induction session) and have a mix of cardio equipment and weights.
The College has a squash court which students are able to use (access via 'Bod card').
Bartelmas Sports Ground
The College sports ground is located about a 10-15 minute cycle from the College, up the Cowley Road. The sports ground is used for a variety of sports and is also sometimes used for BBQs in the summer.
Like most colleges, Oriel has a boat house located on the Isis (accessed on foot or by bike via Christ Church meadows). It is home to the Men's and Women's boat clubs and during 'Torpids' and 'Summer Eights' becomes the basecamp for Oriel supporters cheering on the College boats.
