University Challenge: Oriel Takes on University of Manchester

  • Oriel College on University Challenge
2 August, 2016

A team of Oriel students will compete against the University of Manchester on University Challenge at 7.30pm on Monday 8th August on BBC Two.

The Oriel team members are: 2016-17 JCR President and PPE student Eoin Monaghan, postgraduate philosophers Alec Siantonas and Nathaniel Helms (MCR Vice-President for 2016-17), and doctoral student in environmental research Tobias Thornes.

Oriel has had mixed success on University Challenge in the past. Only once, in 1966, has an Oriel College team taken the University Challenge title, but we did finish as runners-up in both 1999 and 2000.

It's been a while since an Oriel student team made it through to the televised rounds of University Challenge, although a team of Oriel alumni did take part in a Christmas special last December, when they were narrowly beaten by Trinity College Cambridge, 135-140.

Congratulations to the Oriel team on their achievement so far and we look forward to seeing how they get on.

Don't forget to tune in on Monday evening!
