Oriel's Senior Library will feature in the BBC documentary "imagine… Alma Deutscher: Finding Cinderella", presented by Alan Yentob and airing on BBC One on Monday 4th September from 10.45pm to 11.50pm.

A small crew from the BBC came to Oriel last October to film at the College's Champagne Concert, which featured then 11-year-old composer, violinist, and pianist Alma Deutscher.

Alma, accompanied by 8-year-old sister Helen Deutscher on violin, Armand D'Angour (Fellow in Classics at Jesus College) on cello and Kobi Kremnitzer (Fellow in Mathematics at Oriel) on piano, performed a mix of her own compositions and pieces by composers including J.S. Bach, Domenico Scarlatti and Franz Schubert.

The concert was held in Oriel's beautiful Senior Library, and a selection of stills from the concert (courtesy of the BBC) can be viewed in the gallery above.

The BBC was following Alma as she prepared to premiere her first full-length opera, Cinderella, in Vienna in December 2017. The opera is a re-imagining of the Cinderella fairytale, with the action set in an opera house, of which the evil stepmother is the owner, and depicts Cinderella herself as a composer. The first performance of Cinderella received a standing ovation from the audience, and Alma has received warm praise for her composition. The BBC documentary, which focuses on the run-up to this premiere, seeks to "discover the inspiration and motivation behind a truly remarkable talent".

"imagine… Alma Deutscher: Finding Cinderella" will air on BBC One on Monday 4th September from 10.45pm to 11.50pm.
