Temporary Food Provision

The College Hall is at the heart of the College community and is enjoyed by everyone as a venue for socialising. The first two terms of the new academic year will see a major refurbishment of this historical venue to return it to its former glory!

As a result of this much needed restoration, there will be a different catering provision for the start of the new academic year. The new catering provision also allows for the social distancing requirements that are in place in all social settings due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Please be aware that all services and opening times of the services are subject to change at short notice dependent upon the prevailing circumstances.

Self-Catering Kitchens

The College’s self-catering facilities have been improved and expanded upon in order to give students the opportunity to prepare their own food. Please ensure you bring with you all the necessary crockery, cutlery and cooking utensils that you will require to self-cater. We ask that students only use their allocated kitchens.

Oriel Takeaway

  • To supplement the self-catering provision, there will be a temporary marquee located in the middle quad which will be open for a selection of takeaway food items at lunch time and supper time from Monday to Friday during term time.
  • Please use the Meal Booking System (MBS) if you would like to use this service in order to give us an indication of the demand. The MBS can be accessed here.
  • Please ensure that you wear a face covering when using this facility and ensure social distancing when queueing.

College Bar

In addition to the Takeaway facility, the College Bar will be open at lunchtime and in the evenings for a table service for snack items and a full range of drinks. The Bar will be open from 10.00am until 3.00pm & 5.00pm until 11.00pm Monday to Friday.

Fine Dining

As our Hall is temporarily out of action, we are offering the experience of fine dining in College on a smaller scale in one of our other beautifully appointed venues. All Freshers will be invited as a guest to a formal dinner hosted by the Provost over the course of the first few weeks of Michaelmas Term after which time, all students are able to book a place for a ‘Formal Dinner’ on Sunday, Wednesday and Friday evenings during term.

Meals and Times

During Michaelmas and Hilary Terms, the following meals are and will be available from the temporary marquee in Second Quad:


There is no breakfast provision during Michaelmas and Hilary Terms and students should make use of their allocated kitchens.


'Takeaway' lunch, with a variety of hot and cold food, is available in the marquee from 12.45pm until 1.30pm Monday – Friday in Michaelmas and Hilary Terms.

Students need to book for ‘takeaway’ lunch via the online Meal Booking System.

Supper in the Marquee

Supper is available from 6.00pm until 7.00pm from Monday to Friday in the temporary marquee for Michaelmas and Hilary Terms. Students will need to book for dinner via the online Meal Booking System.

Formal Dinners

There will be a limited number of socially-distanced formal dinners during Michaelmas and Hilary Terms, which will be hosted in the Champneys Room in Staircase 7. All Freshers will be invited as guests of the College in the first few weeks of Michaelmas Term on Sunday, Wednesday or Friday evenings.

Thereafter Formal dinners can be booked via the Meal Booking System for Sunday, Wednesday and Friday evenings during term time.

Students must ensure they book their meal 24 hours in advance of the date required. Arrangements are in place to allow members to join a queue to secure places at popular sittings, and to allow them to trade dinner places amongst themselves if they are unable to take up a place they have booked.

Students should be smartly dressed (a jacket and tie or equivalent) and must wear gowns. At Formal Hall on Wednesdays and Sundays (Guest Nights), students should wear suits or equivalent dress.
