College Plumber

Oriel is one of the oldest colleges in Oxford, founded in 1326 and is now home to around 500 students. We are a warm and welcoming college situated in the heart of Oxford.

Working within our maintenance team you will be responsible for the repair and maintenance of all plumbing, associated services and equipment within the college. You will also be responsible for new plumbing installations and additions to existing services.

The role is varied and flexibility to help other areas of the maintenance team when needed is essential. Whilst the principal work is plumbing it will be a requirement to undertake other types of work carried out by the maintenance department and assist other trades to carry out other duties as detailed by the Master of Works. This is a full time role (40 hours a week, Mon-Fri 7.30-4pm).

Responsibilities include:

Planned inspection, cleaning, maintenance and repair of all mechanical, plumbing and associated services and installations; typically:

  • Pressurized vessels (desirable)
  • Drainage
  • Gutters, hopper heads and downpipes
  • Potable water hygiene

Maintain, repair, and replace kitchen equipment, sanitary ware installations.

To maintain minimum sufficient stock levels of necessary consumables and minimize wastage.

To carry out risk assessments prior to carrying out any work and ensure safe practices are followed.

To oversee, mentor and direct other members of the maintenance team or trainees assisting with carrying out work.

To maintain records and documents, both written and electronically to comply with all statutory and college requirements

To carry out work in a tidy and workman like manner, keeping the workplace and the workshop clean and clear of rubbish

Responsive out of hour’s attendance to call out’s from the duty porter.

Qualities and experience we are seeking include: a recognised plumbing qualification gained through an apprenticeship or NVQ, aptitude for general building, able to work at heights from ladders, scaffold or mobile platforms, communication skills and able to work under own initiative.
