Domestic Bursar

Salary & benefits appropriate to an educational charity

Oriel College is looking for a permanent Domestic Bursar. You will lead a highly engaged and talented team delivering our College operations.  We are looking for an experienced professional who understands what would enthuse and engage our important support staff. You would lead that collective expertise to develop our ways of working to deliver a College environment which truly supports our academic mission.

Oriel College wants to create the best environment for its community to flourish and that will require strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills, with an enthusiasm for, and sensitivity to, our higher education context.

Reporting to the Treasurer, you will join as a key member of her senior management team, working closely with colleagues to deliver an integrated operation. Your own team of five direct reports manages over 120 staff across a range of functions including accommodation, catering, security, conferences & events, grounds and gardens.  All these areas drive revenue and cost and a keen eye for opportunities in both will be a defining part of this role. You will also be comfortable taking the lead on the senior management team in a number of compliance areas.

This is a broad, senior and important role that will appeal to a candidate who is energetic, commercial, people focussed and enjoys working closely with colleagues to solve problems and develop modern operations in a traditional setting.  Current exciting developments of note include the delivery of a major project to renew the kitchen facilities, which is well underway. Careful and thoughtful domestic operations planning by the interim Domestic Bursar has put us in a good position to ensure the comprehensive delivery of this project with new kitchens in operation by October 2024. We are also in the planning stage for our 700th anniversary in 2026 where the Domestic Bursar’s team will play a central role in designing and delivering our celebrations.

Applications are invited from senior operational and hospitality professionals  with a broad range of up-to-date experience and knowledge.  Previous experience in an academic institution is not essential and applicants may come from a wide range of backgrounds. If this sounds like you, and you are ready to bring energy and enthusiasm to a satisfying and rewarding role, please get in touch.
