Following a generous gift from an Orielensis and his wife, Oriel College is offering a new scholarship to support one Home/ROI postgraduate student undertake a DPhil in any subject offered at the College.

Applications are particularly encouraged from candidates for Physical and Life Sciences DPhil courses.

The James Meade Scholarship will provide financial support for full tuition fees and median living costs for up to three years, provided the recipient remains on course at Oriel, and will be awarded on the basis of academic merit and financial need. College accommodation is available during the first year of the course and by competitive ballot in subsequent years. We look forward to welcoming the recipient in Michaelmas Term 2021.

The scholarship is named in honour of James Meade (1907–1995), who earned an outstanding first-class degree from Oriel in 1930 and was awarded a Nobel Prize in 1977 for his contributions to twentieth-century economic theory.

Oriel has one of the liveliest MCR communities in Oxford, with regular social events and the well-established ‘Oriel Talks’ presentation series which offers graduate students the opportunity to share their research with the College community. Please visit the MCR website for more information about life as a graduate student at Oriel.
