In the run-up to the Canonisation of John Henry Newman, Oriel was honoured to host a visit from His Eminence Cardinal Gerhard Müller.
As well as having been Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith under Pope Benedict XVI, Cardinal Müller is a Newman scholar, having written extensively on one of Oriel’s most famous sons.
While the Cardinal was on a private visit to Oxford, he was able to see much of the College and, in particular, the parts of Oriel associated with Cardinal Newman, including the Chapel, Hall, Senior Library, and Newman’s rooms in the Front Quad when he lived as a Fellow of the College.
Oriel is celebrating the Canonisation of John Henry Newman with a series of events in Rome over the weekend of 12-13 October. On 12 October, the College will provide a guided tour of the Venerable English College in Rome, founded by Orielensis William Cardinal Allen in 1579. On 13 October, the day of the Canonisation, there will be a buffet lunch on the roof terrace of the Grand Hotel de la Minerve. Further details of this event can be found here.
