The next Oriel Champagne Concert will be on Friday, 6 October from 7.15pm in the University Church of St Mary the Virgin.
These concerts have usually taken place in the Senior Library however, this space is now unavailable for use until 2026, whilst structural works are carried out. This October the concert will take place in the University Church of St Mary the Virgin, a venue which holds a special place in Oriel’s history being the final resting place of our founder Adam de Brome. You can read more about how the Senior Library works will affect the Champagne Concerts in a message from the Chair of Oriel Music Society Committee and his successor here.
This concert will be given by pianist Yevgeny Sudbin, hailed in the Daily Telegraph as ‘potentially one of the greatest pianists of the 21st century’. In the first part of the Recital, the Sonata by Haydn in B minor, Hob.XVI/32, will be followed by “Harmonies du Soir”, which is the eleventh of Liszt’s twelve Transcendental Etudes and then Debussy’s “L’Isle Joyeuse”. After the Interval the programme will consist of sonatas by Scarlatti and Scriabin’s Sonata No.5.
Tickets for the concert are priced at £40 each and include a sparkling wine interlude in the Church. Orielenses are welcome to bring their guests, to share in what proves to be an excellent evening!
