The Oriel Environmental Group’s Trinity talk, will be given by Dr Phil Grünewald, Supernumerary Research Fellow and Tutor in Engineering Science; AJ Hudson, Current DPhil Student in Geography and the Environment, and Thomas O’Callaghan Brown, MSc Student in Biodiversity, Conservation and Management. The talk will take place in the Harris Lecture Theatre at Oriel on Thursday, 23 May from 5.15pm – 6.15pm.

Our Speakers
Dr Phil Grünewald, Supernumerary Research Fellow and Tutor in Engineering Science
Phil is a lecturer in Engineering at Oriel, and was formerly a Jackson Junior Research Fellow in Energy at the College.
He has taught on MSc and MBA programmes at Warwick, Loughborough, Imperial, Reading and Oxford, covering energy systems, storage, demand, economics and policy. Phil is the Research Director of the Energy Demand Observatory and Laboratory (EDOL) programme. His current study explores what we do with electricity in the first place, and asks how the timing could be changed through appropriate interventions. See energy-use.org.
AJ Hudson, DPhil Student in Geography and the Environment
AJ studies the creation, maintenance, and cultural production of the tropical environments that we consider “Paradise” and ultimately his research puts a critical lens on the environmental impacts of recreation. As a political ecologist, he looks at both the natural and social impacts “Paradise” can have on local communities while also exploring what these impacts mean for climate change and our environmental future. Before coming to Oxford, AJ was a high school science teacher and a climate justice activist in Brooklyn, New York. He still actively works with the Caribbean diaspora of New York City, helping several non-profit community organizations to marshal resources to the Caribbean islands for disaster recovery and climate resilience.
Thomas O’Callaghan Brown, MSc Student in Biodiversity, Conservation and Management
Thomas is a master’s student in the Biodiversity, Conservation, and Management course in the School of Geography and the Environment, and is a member of Oriel College. His dissertation is focused on the manifestations of conservation in urban areas to meet Biodiversity Net Gain goals.
