Celebrating 40 years of women at Oriel

There are many pleasant memories of Oriel College. The best ones are getting together with friends at MCR socials, and having friends over at guest dinners. I have a nice recollection of the ritual and frolic of matriculation. It seems to have set me to the daily life of Oxford University.

Getting multiple opportunities to run EDI events through Oriel College. My first supported event was the BAME women event. I brought in women from several colleges to celebrate their diversity and strength in leading meaningful lives, whilst navigating the challenges and opportunities at Oxford.

In 2007 I had the room on the High at the corner of Oriel St. The most incredible place I ever lived. I've never lost the feeling I had moving in of unbelievable privilege. The plant in the photo was named Stalin (because it leaned dramatically left) and I married the boy that gave it to me.

One of my favorite memories at Oriel was taking part in the MCR yoga classes! The classes were the perfect way to unwind, refocus, and catch up with the MCR women. To me, they stand out as an example of the strong and supportive community that makes Oriel so special.

Entering Hall to the low rumble of "Nooooo Women" and eating a lot of brussel sprouts. Experiencing one-on-one instruction with world-leading scholars. Exploring the storied architecture and institutions. Experiencing firsthand the Boat Race drama of that year.

I loved the people, loved the sport, loved being in such an astonishingly beautiful place... but I also loved learning about game theory, and the prisoner's dilemma. Equally good was political theory, & discussions about fair ways of dividing a cake. And how to bake a bigger cake. Key learnings.

It has to be going into the Senior Library for the first time. It was the end of my first week at Oriel, and Hannah, our librarian, joked, "Time to make sure you come back on Monday." Stepping into the library was a "wow" moment, and one I’ll never forget.

Matriculation, October 2023 - when dreams become goals, and goals become reality. Following a year as a Visiting Scholar at Oxford, this day marked the beginning of a wonderful journey in the world of research, enriched with opportunities, memorable moments, and inspiring people.

Working at the graduations! They have such a great atmosphere and celebrate the wonderful achievements of the students. I also loved the Burn’s Night dinner, where we danced in a lively ceilidh after eating lots of Haggis! I am grateful to be part of such a welcoming and inspiring College community.
