A team of 12 cyclists completed a combined 700-mile cycle in celebration of Oriel College’s 700th anniversary on Saturday 9 May
Starting in west London, the 60-mile route took the group through Uxbridge, Amersham and Thame before entering Oxford through Cowley.
“I feel really, really good,” said challenge organiser Robin Greenwood.
“We had good support from people on the road, a couple of support vehicles, and we had great support from the College.”
Greenwood (1968) studied Classics at Oriel and explained why he marked the College’s 700th year with a cycle to remember.
“We wanted to celebrate Oriel,” he said.
“I was lucky enough to get a place at Oriel and I had a great time.
“I made friends for life here, several of whom took part in this event with me today.”

The dozen cyclists’ efforts will benefit the College’s access and outreach programme.
The programme engages with thousands of school pupils from state schools and underrepresented backgrounds each year, working to raise aspirations among those who may not consider higher education an option.
“I went to a state school, and I want other people who don’t know about Oxford and Oriel in particular to see how welcoming Oriel is, to have the opportunities to find out more and then to apply and hopefully get in,” said Greenwood.
“It’s so much a part of my life and I’m glad to be able to give this back in terms of a bit of profile and trying to raise the profile for Oriel’s access and outreach campaign.”
