David Charles, Emeritus Fellow and former Colin Prestige Fellow, has died

We are very sad to announce that our Emeritus Fellow Professor David Charles died on 12 August 2026. He died peacefully, surrounded by his family.

David was appointed as a Tutorial Fellow at Oriel College in 1978. He became a Senior Research Fellow in 2007 and was elected an Emeritus Fellow in 2014. After retiring from Oriel and Oxford, he became H H Newman Professor of Philosophy and Classics at Yale and, most recently, a Visiting Professor at Stanford.
