Guillermo Alberto Santiago Lasso Mendoza who served as the 47th president of Ecuador visited Oriel College in February
Organised by the Oxford University Conservative Association (OUCA), Lasso engaged with students from across the University, sharing insights into his political career and experiences in Ecuador, followed by a Q&A session.
Lasso, who describes himself as a liberal and a humanist, emphasised his commitment to democratic principles. “I respect liberal democracy and the rule of law above all. I respect individual rights, human rights and understand we live in a world with a global order,” he stated. He also expressed his admiration for Winston Churchill, remarking, “I believe Western democracy owes a huge debt to Winston Churchill.”
During the Q&A session, Lasso addressed a range of topics, including the rise of populism, the political and economic challenges facing Ecuador and the future of South America. Reflecting on his own political journey, he offered advice to students considering a career in politics.
“If any of you are going into politics, you should do so with absolute conviction and enthusiasm. Never give up on the first try,” he said. “Today, it is an honour to be in front of you after 15 years in politics — winning and relinquishing power. Fifteen years I worked to see your beautiful smiles this afternoon.”
Lasso’s visit provided students with an opportunity to hear first-hand from a former head of state, offering insights into leadership, governance and the challenges of public service.
