John Albert (1935-2023)

Since leaving Oriel in 1959, John’s relationship with College has not only endured but thrived throughout the decades. John played pivotal roles in the Development Trust and Oriel Society, the predecessors of the Development and Alumni Engagement Office, ensuring that alumni kept in touch with each other and the College after they graduated, and supported future generations of students.

His enthusiasm and fondness for Oriel knew no bounds, and when he wasn’t organising group holidays abroad for Orielenses you might have found him, as a member of the Music Committee, helping to organise the next Champagne Concert. When John became Oriel’s Adam de Brome Fellow and oversaw the legacy giving society, his passion for Oriel saw Society membership grow tremendously and this in turn has made a huge positive impact on College.

Oriel has always appreciated John’s expertise and guidance throughout the years, and was delighted to elect him to an Honorary Fellowship in 2017 in recognition of his considerable service to College. Known to so many Orielenses across the generations, John will be greatly missed throughout our community. John is survived by his widow, Anne, and his four children. An obituary will be published in due course.
