Oriel Summer Institute welcomes international students for Oxford college experience

A selection of Chinese universities partnered with the College as part of Oriel’s continued work with various global educational institutions.

Varied subjects were available for the group to study during their stay in the city:

  • British Literature
  • Engineering
  • Science and AI
  • Philosophy, Politics, Economics (PPE)
  • Law

“I read [about] Oxford and, like Cambridge, this famous university, when I was a little boy in my textbook,” said Nanjing University student Yifei Ye.

“I’m really lucky to have this chance to work in a real Oxford city and experience a real academic environment in Oxford University.”

Away from the lecture hall, students took part in a range of activities including trips to local museums, punting in the River Thames or joining a walking tour of the city.

The visitors also experienced a timeless tradition, combining conversation, elegant dining and a sense of community in a historic setting with a Welcome Reception upon arrival and the farewell Formal Hall, a characteristic Oxford dining experience.

“Our students have learned a lot from this Oriel Summer Institute,” said Yishu Zhao, Office of International Cooperation, Southeast University.

“When they came to Oriel College they immersed in the fabulous and historic campus.”

Students also experienced English culture in different cities as they were invited onto day trips to London and Bath.

“The students’ feedback for this programme was very, very good,” explained Annie Yu, Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen).

“We hope we can have more interaction in the future.

“It’s really different from our collegiate system and I think they learn a lot.”
