Oriel welcomes you to raise a glass of its own new beer

Brainchild of Lodge Manager Samuel Henry, the ‘697’ denoting the College’s 697th year, is a crisp, clean, lightly hopped English Pale Ale.

Sam says: “A number of other Colleges use white label beers to create a ‘College beer’ but I wanted to create something special for the birthday which was uniquely Oriel.” Having come up with the idea he then canvassed help to develop the beer from across the College, engaging like-minded appreciators of fine ales Daniel Hurn (Maintenance Manager), James Fletcher (Deputy Director of Development), Oliver Sladen (Financial Controller), Tim Verdon (Domestic Bursar), and Julian Main (Deputy Butler).

The team worked with XT Breweries to select the UK grown hops Admiral, Jester, Olicana, UK Cascade, and Endeavour to make up the special blend. CAMRA enthusiast Oliver Sladen describes the beer as having a ‘complex and fresh aroma with wheat malt balancing out the flavour with subtle sweetness.’ The naming of the beer ‘697’ came from James Fletcher, who saw the opportunity to continue the development of the beer so look out for ‘698’, 699’ and of course ‘700’ which will be launched in our birthday year.

After the formal launch on the 28th April you will be able to buy the beer in the JCR, MCR and at the College Ball. Presentation packs, highlighting the artwork of Louisa Chandler (Development Executive – Research), will be available for sale in the Lodge so there will be no excuses for not raising a glass of this special beer and joining in to make the College traditional toast ‘Floreat Oriel!’
