PLANCKS is a theoretical physics competition for undergraduate students, organised by the International Association of Physics Students (IAPS) and supported by the Institute of Physics (IOP)
Chris Ong and Peter Djemal, both second-year Physics students at Oriel College, competed as part of the University of Oxford team ‘POSTLIMS’, which secured second place at this year’s preliminary round hosted at Swansea University. As a result, POSTLIMS will represent the UK and Ireland at the world championships scheduled for May in Barcelona.
PLANCKS offers students an opportunity to enhance their passion for physics, network with their peers, and acquire valuable skills and knowledge beneficial for their academic progression and future careers.
The name of the competition is a reference to the famous German physicist Max Planck but also is an acronym, the full form of which is ‘Physics League Across Numerous Countries for Kick-ass Students’.
The event this year featured 128 participants from 37 universities. Activities included a challenging four-hour examination, presentations from diverse speakers, a murder mystery event, a poster session, and numerous social gatherings over the weekend.
“We’re very proud that Chris and Peter have now joined the select club of a young generation of extremely talented Oriel physicists who have done exceptionally well, both at the national and international level of the prestigious PLANCKS competition. We wish them all the best for the finals in Barcelona,” said Julien Devriendt, Professor of Astrophysics at the University of Oxford and Fellow, Tutor in Physics and Tutor for Admissions and Outreach at Oriel College.
