Professor Patrick Farrell has been elected a Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM)

SIAM is the main learned society worldwide for applied mathematics and the society’s Fellows are recognised for their “outstanding research and service to the community”.
Farrell joins 24 other mathematicians elected as Fellows in 2026.
The Fellow and tutor in Mathematics at Oriel College and Professor of Scientific Computing at Oxford University is being recognised for his “contributions to algorithms and software for the numerical solution of partial differential equations”.
“It’s a wonderful honour to be elected to the fellowship of SIAM,” said Farrell.
“SIAM has had a huge influence on my career — from publishing in SIAM journals, to serving as an editor on its journals and book series, and to meeting collaborators and friends at SIAM conferences.
“I’m hugely grateful to SIAM and to all of my collaborators and students for making research so much fun.”
The recognition comes after SIAM awarded Farrell the Germund Dahlquist Prize in 2025.
The Germund Dahlquist Prize is awarded every two years to one individual “for original contributions to numerical solution of differential equations and numerical methods for scientific computing”.
Farrell joined Oriel College as a Fellow and the University of Oxford’s Mathematical Institute as an associate professor in 2016. He was promoted to a full professor in 2022.
His research focuses on numerical solutions of partial differential equations arising in physics and chemistry.
