Statement from the Provost on the 700th anniversary of Oriel College’s foundation

700 years ago, King Edward II confirmed Adam de Brome’s foundation of Oriel College with a royal charter.

The longevity and continuity of this college and its work is astonishing. Few institutions have endured for so long, and even fewer have remained devoted to the same cause.

Our means of inquiry have changed, our understanding of the world is different – but the ends to which we as a college direct ourselves are much the same.

Of course, this has not all happened by accident – for 700 years each generation has decided that this college must be protected and nurtured. Its conservation has required careful and diligent custodianship.

On the occasion of our anniversary, I am mindful of our responsibility to this wonderful college, the experience of our students and the vital academic work and research that happens here.

It is now up to Oriel’s Governing Body to ensure the future of not just our heritage but the education we offer and the spirit of free inquiry that underpins the whole academic enterprise.
