The Importance of Being Earnest in Oriel’s garden

Summer Garden Play 2023
Sunshine, talent and amazing costumes all combined last week to culminate in a captivating performance of Oscar Wilde’s classic comedy, ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’, as Oriel staged its annual garden play.
A troupe of 19 students spent a good part of Trinity term preparing the play and staged it between the 1st and 3rd June on the staircase of Oriel’s Hall in First Quad.
Directed by Bella Simpson (2nd Year, Music) and produced by Dowon Jung (2nd year, History), students from Oriel, Balliol and Jesus College played leading roles.
The three main three characters Jack Worthing, Algernon Moncrieff and Lady Bracknell were played, by Grace Romans (Oriel, 3rd Year Classics), Freddie Houlahan (Balliol, 2nd Year English) and Peregrine Neger (Jesus, 1st Year Classics), respectively.
The show’s producer Dowon Jung (2nd year, History) said that the cast and production team were amazing: “They’re all so immensely talented, and I am so grateful to have been able to work with them”.
According to Dowon, Oriel staff members “were immensely helpful in preparing the production”. He expresses his gratitude to all who helped to bring the show to life:
“We’re very grateful to all of them, especially Tim Verdon (Domestic Bursar) for helping us arrange everything, as well as Sam Henry (Lodge Manager), Asefay Aberaha (SCR Butler), and Daniel Hurn (Building Maintenance Manager) for taking time out of their busy schedules to help make the play work”.
Staging an annual outdoor ‘garden play’, in First Quad produced entirely by students, is an Oriel tradition. Previous productions have included ‘Twelfth Night’, ‘The Beux Strategem’, ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’, and other literary classics.
