Ms Megan Bowler

MA, MSt

Megan Bowler is a DPhil student in Classics at Christ Church. She previously completed her undergraduate and master’s degrees at Oriel before returning to the college as a Lecturer.

Megan’s DPhil research topic, “Etymological Thought in Greek Comedy” (supervised by Professor Andreas Willi), explores how comic plays and fragments from the 5th and early 4th centuries BC engage with contemporary ideas about language and the origins of words. Comedy offers an intriguing case study for questions about the functions and popular perceptions of etymology during this pre-disciplinary period.

At Oriel, Megan teaches Greek Language and Literature.

Research Interests

Megan’s research interests lie particularly in Greek Comedy, and in philosophy and political thought in Greek literature. She has also published on the educational value of Classics and language-learning.
