Study Visit Programme 2019

Oriel offers a programme of subject specific, one-night residentials for Year 12 students from UK state schools and colleges. All expenses (accommodation at Oriel, all meals, activities, and travel) are funded, thanks to the generosity of an Oriel alumnus.

The Study Visit programme is designed to give students from schools or backgrounds with limited experience of Oxbridge the opportunity to experience living and studying at Oriel and at Oxford, and learn about the application process for their chosen subject.

40 places are available on each Study Visit.

What to expect

Study Day students arrive in the afternoon/evening prior to the full day programme. The college offers an off-peak return train ticket from any UK station for every attendee. (Attendees travelling from Northern Ireland or Scotland will be able to have air fares reimbursed.) Students will have an opportunity to look around the sights of the University and familiarise themselves with Oxford, and eat dinner in the college dining hall before staying overnight in student accommodation (single rooms).

A typical study day programme would be as follows:

10:00: Introductory talk: introducing Oxford & Oriel

11:00: Subject focused lecture by an Oriel tutor

12:00: Seminar on applying to & studying the subject(s) at Oxford

13:30: Demonstration interview/interview workshop

14:15: Seminars led by Oriel academics

15:30: Q&A with Oriel academic staff

16:15 Departure

When are this year's Study Visits taking place?

We are currently accepting applications for:

History: 26th-27th June 2019

Who can apply for a Study Visit place?

Study Day applicants must satisfy all of the following criteria:

  • Currently in Year 12 at a UK state school
  • Predicted A-Level grades equivalent to the University of Oxford's standard offer for the relevant course (see the university website for full details)
  • Interested in studying the subject at degree level (Study Days are not intended to have a general focus)

Previous Study Days have been oversubscribed with up to five applicants per place, so applicants will also be prioritised based on the following criteria:

  • Studying at a non-selective (comprehensive) state school
  • Studying at a school with limited history of progression to Oxbridge
  • Home postcode with a limited history of progression to HE (POLAR-3)
  • Home postcode in ACORN category 4 or 5, or POLAR quintiles 1 or 2
  • Receipt of Free School Meals/Pupil Premium

Applicants are also welcome to notify us of any other relevant personal circumstances. Applications from any part of the UK are welcome: train travel from any UK station is funded for every attendee.

How do I apply?

Please complete the form below in full. The closing date for the History Study Visit is midday on Monday 10th June.

You should provide an email address for a teacher at your school, who may be asked to send a short reference in support of your application to outreach@oriel.ox.ac.uk. No late applications will be considered.

A waiting list will be in operation: previous Study Days have received more suitable applications than places available.
