Oriel College is looking to recruit a Graduate Teaching and Research Scholar in Mathematics. The appointment will be for one year with a possible extension of up to two years.
By October 2025, applicants will have completed at least one year of postgraduate study and will have embarked on a course leading to a DPhil in Mathematics at the University of Oxford. Applicants be expected to have passed the Transfer of Status procedures before applying. Once appointed, the successful applicant will be expected to transfer their college membership to Oriel (with the permission of their current College). The successful candidate will also be required to take a course in tutorial teaching, if they have not already done so.
The duties of the scholar are to teach for the College for up to 4 hours per week, assist in the undergraduate admissions process (weeks 9 and 10 of Michaelmas Term), help with administration of the teaching of mathematics in college, and to pursue doctoral-level study in any area of Mathematics. The precise teaching duties are flexible and may to some extent be adapted to the successful candidate’s areas of expertise and experience. However, preference will be given to candidates who are able to teach Prelims and Part A mathematics courses in probability and statistics. The starting date is 1st of October 2025.
The GTR Scholar will be paid for tutorial teaching and admissions at the hourly standard tuition rates as set by the Senior Tutors’ Committee. The Scholar will receive free accommodation (or an allowance of £2,933 per annum if living outside college accommodation) and will also have access to a research allocation of £493 per annum. In addition, the Scholar will be a member of both the Oriel Senior Common Room and the Middle Common Room. They will be entitled to a certain number of free lunches and dinners in the Senior Common Room, and free lunches and dinners in Hall, in accordance with the terms and conditions of the post.
