Oriel College seeks to appoint a 3 hour Stipendiary Lecturer in English from January 2026 to end of September 2027, with responsibility for teaching in the period 1660–1830. Candidates should have completed their doctorate or made substantial progress towards completion, and should be equipped to undertake tutorial teaching and associated duties.
The person appointed will work with the Main Organising Tutor for English; Dr Kathryn Murphy and will be expected to undertake teaching for an average of 3 contact hours per week during term time to undergraduates at Oriel College, or to students at other colleges in return for payment to be remitted to Oriel, covering FHS Papers 4 (Literature in English, 1660–1760) and Paper 5 (Literature in English, 1760–1830). The Lecturer may also cover topics in Classics and English, including teaching for the Epic Paper. The teaching will also involve revision support for final year students. The Lecturer will assist with general administration, the pastoral care of undergraduates, Open Days and outreach activities.
The basic stipend will be according to the Senior Tutors’ Committee recommended scale, currently £8,453 – £9,335 (pro rata) per annum. Contributory membership of USS (the Universities Superannuation Scheme) is also offered if eligible. The Lecturer will be entitled 6 meals (lunch and dinner) and a research allowance of £494 per year (pro rata).
