Farewell to three Fellows

The Provost, Fellows and students gathered in June to bid a fond farewell to Professor Ian Forrest, Catto Fellow and Tutor in History; Professor Chris Conlon, Fellow and Tutor in Medicine; and Dr Maike Bublitz, Ron Bancroft Fellow and Tutor in Biochemistry. Celebrating their time at Oriel, each Fellow has contributed much to our thriving community and the excellent teaching on offer here.
“Oriel’s Governing Body will change with the departure at the end of term of three outstanding Fellows. Each has proved an exemplary academic, balancing the education of students, supervision of graduates, faculty work and their own research as well as working as College trustees. The work of a Fellow is intensive and wide-ranging. We shall miss their deep experience and I shall miss their advice and considerable care for our College”.

Dr Maike Bublitz
Dr Bublitz leaves us after eight years as the Ron Bancroft Fellow and Tutor in Biochemistry. Her research has focused on the biological functions of certain membrane transport proteins as well as X-ray crystallography and drug development against pathogenic bacteria and fungi. Dr Bublitz is taking up a position at the Institute of Translational Medicine at the Private University of the Principality of Liechtenstein (UFL).
Professor Conlon is an Honorary Consultant Physician in Infectious Diseases at the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and has been a Fellow and Tutor in Clinical Medicine at Oriel since 2005, teaching medical undergraduates in lectures and seminars, and at the bedside. His main interests include HIV, TB, Travel Medicine and COVID, and his many responsibilities include covering the 18 bed Infectious Diseases Unit at the Churchill Hospital in Oxford. Professor Conlon is now retiring.
Professor Ian Forrest
Professor Forrest was Fellow Archivist at Oriel for many years, as well as Catto Fellow and Tutor in History since 2006. His research interests lie in the religious, economic and social history of Europe between 1200 and 1500, with a particular interest in relationships between ordinary people and powerful institutions. He is leaving Oriel to take on the senior role of Head of Humanities at Glasgow University.
