Tradition dictates that at the end of Trinity term students at Oriel College stage a theatrical production in First Quad. So it is that, for three nights only in June 2024, a troupe of students directed by Danann Kilburn are performing Twelfth Night.
The production of the Shakespeare’s timeless romantic comedy, which explores themes that are definitely relevant today, such as the nature of gender and sexuality, adopts an “Old Money Macabre” aesthetic, Kilburn explains.
Melita Monemvasioti is the assistant director of the production, Bella Simpson and Alice Randall are co-producers, and the cast and rest of the crew are mostly students from Oriel College.
Kilburn says: “It’s very exciting to have so much Oriel talent on show!
The melancholic character of Duke Orsino is played by Simpson, Sam Hardaker is Sebastian, and Phoebe Winter is Malvolia. Meanwhile the indomitable Viola, who disguises herself as a page named Cesario, is played by Lara MacHa from St Hugh’s College.
The performance dates of the 2024 Garden Play are Wednesday 12 June, Thursday 13 June and Friday 14 June. Tickets are available online now.
