Oriel College intends to appoint a Graduate Teaching and Research Scholar (GTRS) in Theology, with a specialisation in the Hebrew Bible, commencing in October 2023. The appointment is renewable for up to three years. This position is internal, and open to current Oriel DPhil students in Theology only.
By October 2023, applicants will have completed at least one year of postgraduate study and will have embarked on a course leading to a DPhil in Theology with a specialisation in Hebrew Bible or a related subject at Oriel College. Applicants will normally be expected to have passed the Transfer of Status procedures by October 2023 and to have completed the Preparation for Learning and Teaching at Oxford (PLTO) offered by the Faculty of Theology and Religion as part of the Graduate Teacher Training Scheme (GTTS).
The person appointed will be expected to teach for the College for 3 to 4 hours per week and to pursue doctoral-level study in any area of the Hebrew Bible or a related subject. The precise teaching duties are flexible and can to some extent be adapted to the successful candidate’s areas of expertise and experience. However, preference will be given to candidates who are able to teach widely from among the papers offered by the Faculty in the Hebrew Bible and related areas. The appointee will work under the direction of the Tutorial Fellow in Theology, Dr William Wood, and the Theology Main Organising Tutor, Dr Brendan Harris. Throughout the duration of the post, the GTRS will receive mentoring to foster professional growth in the areas of teaching, administration, and research.
The GTRS will also be asked to set and mark collections (practice examinations) and to participate in the undergraduate admissions process (normally Week 10 of Michaelmas Term). Admissions training will be provided.
The GTRS will be paid for tutorial teaching and admissions at the hourly standard tuition rates as set by the Senior Tutors’ Committee. The Scholar will receive free accommodation (or an allowance of £2,730 per annum if living outside College accommodation) and will also have access to a research allocation of £484 per annum. In addition, the Scholar will be a member of both the Oriel Senior Common Room and the Middle Common Room. They will be entitled to a certain number of free lunches and dinners in the Senior Common Room, and free lunches and dinners in Hall, in accordance with the terms and conditions of the post.
