The College was greatly saddened to hear of the death of Peter Ainsworth on 6th April 2021.

Peter served on the current Independent Commission of Inquiry launched by Oriel in June 2020 to consider the Cecil Rhodes statue and associated issues, and the College was grateful to him for his contribution to this important work.

Peter served as Conservative MP for East Surrey for 18 years, until he stepped down in 2010. During his time as an MP he was Shadow Secretary of State for Culture and Shadow Secretary of State of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

Peter held a lifelong passion for heritage, and he was appointed as Chairman of The Churches Conservation Trust in July 2016 and Chair of the Heritage Alliance in 2018. Peter was also UK Chair of the Big Lottery Fund (Now National Lottery Community Fund) from 2011 to 2019 and was a Board member of the Environment Agency.

We send our condolences to Peter’s family and friends.
