Fellow & Tutor in Mathematics
Oriel College has a lively and stimulating mathematics community of about 20 undergraduates, various graduate students, three tutors and a graduate teaching assistant. Our practice is to admit candidates who have excellent mathematical ability and who are highly motivated in learning mathematics.
In the first two years of the Oxford course, students are introduced to the breadth of mathematics. Lecture courses are accompanied by two or three tutorials per week. In the third and fourth years, students are allowed considerable degree of specialization and the tutorials that support the lecture courses are largely replaced by intercollegiate classes, though students still see their tutors for advice and occasional tutorials. Oriel mathematicians are loaned a set of standard textbooks for the duration of their University course. The College library provides on long-term loan any additional texts requested by mathematicians for their studies.
The individualized attention provided by the tutorials is an opportunity not only to study the coursework but also to experience the enthusiasm that tutors have for research and the applications of mathematics to the world. Oriel tutors and lecturers are committed to teaching excellence and their teaching interests cover most of the subjects taught in the Oxford course. They are also very active researchers.
I feel I can delve into any branch of mathematics that takes my interest.
The broad choice of options in the Oxford course allows graduates to choose from a wide range of careers; either those that involve mathematics directly or those for which a mathematics degree has given them an excellent rigorous training and educational experience. Some of our graduates have gone to undertake a graduate degree and others take up employment, for example, in industry, teaching, finance, mathematical modelling, and actuarial science.
All candidates must sit the Admissions Test for Mathematics. Conditional offers: A*A*A at A-Level (or equivalent) with the A*s in Mathematics and Further Mathematics (if taken). The majority of entrants have two A-Levels in mathematics. Applicants with only one mathematics A-level are not at a disadvantage in the competition for places, but successful candidates have more preparation to do over the summer before they start their course.
